We_Can is a student empowered organization in National Institute of Technology Agartala working to improve the lives of not-so-privileged children, their families and communities through an approach that puts children at the center of community development. We_Can’s aim is to impart basic quality education to the children residing around the college campus, in order to build a fundamental base for them. We cater to the need of these children in an effective way.
We_Can started its journey back in the year 2014, with a handful of children. Volunteers used to teach them so that they can get quality education, which they were deprived of. Many of those students used to go to school just for the sake of enrollment. A very few of them had the zeal to learn or even know the meaning the education and school. Their families are living under minimal resources and can’t afford a “high standard” education even if they are willing to do so. To address this issue, we managed to get a classroom in one of the buildings in NIT Agartala campus with the kind support of the administration. Then, as we started spreading the word about it, more and more people came to know about our initiative and were ready to be a part of it. So, our volunteer base gradually increased. Also, with new batch of students joining the institute every year, we have built a dynamic team of enthusiastic volunteers.
Now at present, we cater to nearly 40 students. We teach them daily (expect Sundays) for two hours. Apart from teaching itself, we don’t leave any stone unturned in making them realize the importance of learning. As all the volunteers are themselves students, we try our best to impart in them a sense of learning and self motivation so that they keep on progressing and fulfill their dreams!
- Focused Areas:
- English Language training (Monday)
- Mathematics and Sciences (Tuesday – Thursday)
- Computer Education (Friday)
- Activity (Science Experiments etc.) and Moral Classes (Saturday)
- Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalaya (JNV) Entrance preparation (for selected children)
Along with the above schedule, we have assigned subjects and volunteers to all those children who are regular in attendance. For other students, we have prepared a syllabus according to their class. These students are taught as per the proposed syllabus.
On daily basis, a track record of specific children (regular ones) is maintained to review their learning afterwards.
- Ongoing projects:
PROJECT KOSHAL: With the objective to make children skillful & creative and to add a new dimension to their thinking, We_Can family came up with the idea to start a course on SCRATCH for a limited number of children, to start with. It was later named as “Project Koshal”, where the Hindi word Koshal is used to describe something which is skillful, smart and productive. As this project has intended the same for the children undergoing this course, the name itself justifies everything. Project Koshal is undertaken by some of the We_Can volunteers with the target to complete it within six months deadline. The project was started on October 13, 2017. Under this project, separate classes are conducted on Friday of every week for some selected children during the regular class timings, i.e. 6 to 8 PM. These classes are made fun and interactive with the use of projector and laptop, bought by the volunteers involved in the project.
What is scratch?
Scratch is defined as a “friendly” programming language, which allows one to create his/her own interactive stories, games and animations and share it with others around the world. In the process of designing and programming Scratch projects, young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically and work collectively – each one of these is an essential skill for life in the 21st century. In a nutshell, Scratch gives wings to your imagination and turns it into a reality; and also spreads the word around the world regarding what you have achieved. Scratch is designed especially for ages 8 to 16, by Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT media lab. It is available for free at https://scratch.mit.edu in over 40 different languages. It is an ideal language to kick-start the programming career of an individual.
Currently, ten students are taught under this project.
With the objective to provide a platform to the children, where they will have the opportunity to showcase their talents, We_Can celebrates its most-awaited annual fest, ANANYA. It is usually scheduled in the month of February or March of every year as per the administrative approval. It is a two day fest packed with a lot of fun, games, competitions and cultural activities for children. We not only encourage We_Can children to enthusiastically participate, but also every children studying in nearby schools. ANANYA gives them a chance to break the barriers and lead in front. Through games and competitions, we inculcate the spirit of competition in these children.
ANANYA has received a lot of appreciation from students and faculty of NIT Agartala. It is cherished a lot due to the fact that many of the children don’t enjoy such a function/fest in their respective schools. The volunteering team of We_Can well understands the fact that only studies may make a child bookworm, but the extra-curricular activities will ensure his/her overall development.
ANANYA 3.0 (2017) was organized at Visvesvarya Auditorium of NIT Agartala on 25th and 26th March 2017. Various games (outdoor and indoor) and competitions (cultural and robotics) were organized successfully. All children participants were also invited for lunch on both the days.
- Journey Ahead:
Though we are trying our best to make best of it, but still the change we wish to witness is sluggish. It’s a long journey ahead. More than a social cause, it is the sole responsibility of every We_Can volunteer to contribute to the change. Changing someone’s perspective and mind is not a matter of moments. It takes a lot of effort and patience to make these children realize the world that awaits them. In India, one can find such children in every corner, children who have bags but no books in it, children who have desire but no way to fulfill it, children who have courage but no means to prove it. Our nation needs more and more such initiatives to break the wall between education and learners. So, take the pledge to be a part of one of such initiatives #JoinTheMovement
